Love is but the song we sing, And fear's the way we die You can make the mountains ring Or make the angels cry Know the dove is on the wing And you need not know why
C'mon people now, Smile on your brother Ev'rybody get together Try and love one another right now
Some will come and some will go We shall surely pass When the one that left us here Returns for us at last We are but a moments sunlight Fading in the grass
C'mon people now, Smile on your brother Ev'rybody get together Try and love one another right now
If you hear the song I sing, You must understand You hold the key to love and fear All in your trembling hand Just one key unlocks them both It's there at your command
C'mon people now, Smile on your brother Ev'rybody get together Try and love one another right now Right now Right now!
Now that it's time Now that the hour hand has landed at the end Now that it's real Now that the dreams have given all they had to lend I want to know do I stay or do I go And maybe try another time And do I really have a hand in my forgetting ?
Now that I've tried Now that I've finally found that this is not the way, Now that I turn Now that I feel it's time to spend the night away I want to know do I stay or do I go And maybe finally split the rhyme And do I really understand the undernetting ?
Yes and the morning has me Looking in your eyes And seeing mine warning me To read the signs carefully.
Now that it's light Now that the candle's falling smaller in my mind Now that it's here Now that I'm almost not so very far behind I want to know do I stay or do I go And maybe follow another sign And do I really have a song that I can ride on ?
Now that I can Now that it's easy, ever easy all around. Now that I'm here Now that I'm falling to the sunlights and a song I want to know do I stay or do I go And do I have to do just one And can I choose again if I should lose the reason ?
Yes, and the morning Has me looking in your eyes And seeing mine warning me To read the signs more carefully.
Now that I smile, Now that I'm laughing even deeper inside. Now that I see, Now that I finally found the one thing I denied It's now I know do I stay or do I go And it is finally I decide That I'll be leaving In the fairest of the seasons.
From the album Life's a Riot with Spy Vs Spy in 1983
I was twenty one years when I wrote this song Im twenty two now, but I wont be for long People ask when will you grow up to be a man But all the girls I loved at school Are already pushing prams
I loved you then as I love you still Tho I put you on a pedestal, They put you on the pill I dont feel bad about letting you go I just feel sad about letting you know
I dont want to change the world Im not looking for a new england Im just looking for another girl I dont want to change the world Im not looking for a new england Im just looking for another girl
I loved the words you wrote to me But that was bloody yesterday I cant survive on what you send Every time you need a friend
I saw two shooting stars last night I wished on them but they were only satellites Is it wrong to wish on space hardware I wish, I wish, I wish youd care
I dont want to change the world Im not looking for a new england Im just looking for another girl
Everybody knows that the dice are loaded Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed Everybody knows that the war is over Everybody knows the good guys lost Everybody knows the fight was fixed The poor stay poor, the rich get rich Thats how it goes Everybody knows
Everybody knows that the boat is leaking Everybody knows that the captain lied Everybody got this broken feeling Like their father or their dog just died
Everybody talking to their pockets Everybody wants a box of chocolates And a long stem rose Everybody knows
Everybody knows that you love me baby Everybody knows that you really do Everybody knows that youve been faithful Ah give or take a night or two Everybody knows youve been discreet But there were so many people you just had to meet Without your clothes And everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows Thats how it goes Everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows Thats how it goes Everybody knows
And everybody knows that its now or never Everybody knows that its me or you And everybody knows that you live forever Ah when youve done a line or two Everybody knows the deal is rotten Old black joes still pickin cotton For your ribbons and bows And everybody knows
And everybody knows that the plague is coming Everybody knows that its moving fast Everybody knows that the naked man and woman Are just a shining artifact of the past Everybody knows the scene is dead But theres gonna be a meter on your bed That will disclose What everybody knows
And everybody knows that youre in trouble Everybody knows what youve been through From the bloody cross on top of calvary To the beach of malibu Everybody knows its coming apart Take one last look at this sacred heart Before it blows And everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows Thats how it goes Everybody knows
Oh everybody knows, everybody knows Thats how it goes Everybody knows

Will you meet me in the middle, will you meet me in the air? Will you love me just a little, just enough to show you care? Well I tried to fake it, I dont mind sayin, I just cant make it
Well, I keep on thinkin bout you, sister golden hair surprise And I just cant live without you; cant you see it in my eyes? Now I been one poor correspondent, and I been too, too hard to find But it doesnt mean you aint been on my mind
Will you meet me in the middle, will you meet me in the air? Will you love me just a little, just enough to show you care? Well I tried to fake it, I dont mind sayin, I just cant make it
I met my love by the gas works wall Dreamed a dream by the old canal I Kissed my girl by the factory wall Dirty old town Dirty old town
Clouds are drifting across the moon Cats are prowling on their beat Spring's a girl from the streets at night Dirty old town Dirty old town
I Heard a siren from the docks Saw a train set the night on fire I Smelled the spring on the smoky wind Dirty old town Dirty old town
I'm gonna make me a big sharp axe Shining steel tempered in the fire I'll chop you down like an old dead tree Dirty old town Dirty old town
I met my love by the gas works wall Dreamed a dream by the old canal I kissed my girl by the factory wall Dirty old town Dirty old town Dirty old town Dirty old town
And i will stroll the merry way and jump the hedges first and i will drink the clear clean water for to quench my thirst and i shall watch the ferry-boats and they'll get high on a bluer ocean against tomorrow's sky and i will never grow so old again and i will walk and talk in gardens all wet with rain Oh sweet thing, sweet thing my, my, my, my, my sweet thing and i shall drive my chariot down your streets and cry 'hey, it's me, i'm dynamite and i don't know why' and you shall take me strongly in your arms again and i will not remember that i even felt the pain. we shall walk and talk in gardens all misty and wet with rain and i will never, never, never grow so old again. Oh sweet thing, sweet thing my, my, my, my, my sweet thing and i will raise my hand up into the night time sky and count the stars that's shining in your eye just to dig it all an' not to wonder that's just fine and i'll be satisfied not to read in between the lines and i will walk and talk in gardens all wet with rain and i will never, ever, ever, ever grow so old again. oh sweet thing, sweet thing sugar-baby with your champagne eyes and your saint-like smile....
A thousand empty window And only half the lights are out I wonder what these people's lives What they might be all about
Do they got a lover And could they have a family Could it be their just as lonesome As you and me
I wanna shout out Shout out loud Why don't you all Just come on out And we can Tear it all down, yeah
White lights burning Down an empty avenue I wonder if their driver Found someone he can go on home to
I wanna shout out Shout out loud Why don't you all Just come on out And we can Tear it all down, yeah
Cause everybody's got a part in the game And everybody's got a cross they can claim And everybody's got somebody to blame But we all must find our own way, yeah yeah
I wanna shout out Shout out loud I wanna shout out Shout out loud I wanns shout out Shout out loud
Shout out loud, yeah, yeah Shout out loud, yeah, yeah
In the year 2525 If man is still alive If woman can survive they may find
In the year 3535 Ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lies Everything you think, do and say Is in the pill you took today
In the year 4545 Ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need your eyes You won't find a thing to chew Nobody's gonna look at you
In the year 5555 Your arms hanging limp at your sides Your legs got nothing to do Some machine's doing that for you
In the year 6565 Ain't gonna need no husband, won't need no wife You'll pick your son, pick your daughter too From the bottom of a long glass tube, whoa-oh
In the year 7510 If God's a-comin' He oughta make it by then Maybe He'll look around Himself and say Guess it's time for the judgment day
In the year 8510 God is gonna shake His mighty head He'll either say I'm pleased where man has been Or tear it down and start again, whoa-oh
In the year 9595 I'm kinda wonderin' if man is gonna be alive He's taken everything this old Earth can give And he ain't put back nothin', whoa-oh
Now it's been ten thousand years Man has cried a billion tears For what he never knew Now man's reign is through
But through eternal night The twinkling of starlight So very far away Maybe it's only yesterday
In the year 2525 If man is still alive If woman can survive, they may find
Got my window open wide Got my window open wide Got a good woman by my side Got a good woman by my side
Now this kind of day Has no night Yeah This kind of day Has no night Ain't got much on my mind Ain't got much on my mind

Now watching the streets Filling up Watching the streets filling up In the shade of the summer sun In the shade of the summer sun
Got sweet apple pie on the stove Got sweet apple pie on the stove The birds they're all flyin' low The birds they're all flyin' low
'Cause they know Something good this way comes
The trouble, doll Is not moving mountains, but Digging the ground that you're on If it's true That good fortune gives no chase We got just what it takes
Collar up on my coat Collar up on my coat Trucks are pullin' In for the show Trucks are pullin' In for the show
Grasshopper jump in the road Grasshopper jump in the road Kids they're all running home The kids They're all running home
'Cause they know Something good this way comes Yeah Something good this way comes
The trouble, doll Is not moving mountains, but Digging the ground That you're on If it's true That good fortune Gives no chase We got just what it takes Got my window open wide Got my window open wide Got a good woman by my side Got a good woman by my side
'Cause I know Something good this way comes Yeah Something good this way comes Yeah Something good this way comes Mmmm, mmm, mmmm
Well, I had just got out from the county prison Doin ninety days for non-support Tried to find me an executive position But no matter how smooth I talked They wouldnt listen to the fact that I was a genius The man say, we got all that we can use. Now igot them steadily depressin, low down mind messin Working at the car wash blues
Well, I should be sittin in an air conditioned office in a swivel chair Talkin some trash to the secretaries Sayin, here, now mama, come on over here. Instead, Im stuck here rubbin these fenders with a rag And walkin home in soggy old shoes With them steadily depressin, low down mind messin Workin at the car wash blues
You know a man of my ability He should be smokin on a big cigar But till I get myself straight I guess Ill just have to wait In my rubber suit a-rubbin these cars
Well, all I can do is a shake my head You might not believe that its true For workin at this end of niagara falls Is an undiscovered howard hughes So baby, dont expect to see me With no double martini in any high-brow society news Cause I got them steadily depressin, low down mind messin Workin at the car wash blues So baby, dont expect to see me With no double martini in any high-brow society news Cause I got them steadily depressin, low down mind messin Workin at the car wash blues Yeah I got them steadily depressin, low down mind messin Workin at the car wash blues
Early one mornin the sun was shinin, I was layin in bed Wondrin if shed changed at all If her hair was still red. Her folks they said our lives together Sure was gonna be rough They never did like mamas homemade dress Papas bankbook wasnt big enough. And I was standin on the side of the road Rain fallin on my shoes Heading out for the east coast Lord knows Ive paid some dues gettin through, Tangled up in blue.
She was married when we first met Soon to be divorced I helped her out of a jam, I guess, But I used a little too much force. We drove that car as far as we could Abandoned it out west Split up on a dark sad night Both agreeing it was best. She turned around to look at me As I was walkin away I heard her say over my shoulder, Well meet again someday on the avenue, Tangled up in blue.
I had a job in the great north woods Working as a cook for a spell But I never did like it all that much And one day the ax just fell. So I drifted down to new orleans Where I happened to be employed Workin for a while on a fishin boat Right outside of delacroix. But all the while I was alone The past was close behind, I seen a lot of women But she never escaped my mind, and I just grew Tangled up in blue.
She was workin in a topless place And I stopped in for a beer, I just kept lookin at the side of her face In the spotlight so clear. And later on as the crowd thinned out Is just about to do the same, She was standing there in back of my chair Said to me, dont I know your name? I muttered somethin underneath my breath, She studied the lines on my face. I must admit I felt a little uneasy When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe, Tangled up in blue.
She lit a burner on the stove and offered me a pipe I thought youd never say hello, she said You look like the silent type. Then she opened up a book of poems And handed it to me Written by an italian poet From the thirteenth century. And every one of them words rang true And glowed like burnin coal Pourin off of every page Like it was written in my soul from me to you, Tangled up in blue.
I lived with them on montague street In a basement down the stairs, There was music in the cafes at night And revolution in the air. Then he started into dealing with slaves And something inside of him died. She had to sell everything she owned And froze up inside. And when finally the bottom fell out I became withdrawn, The only thing I knew how to do Was to keep on keepin on like a bird that flew, Tangled up in blue.
So now Im goin back again, I got to get to her somehow. All the people we used to know Theyre an illusion to me now. Some are mathematicians Some are carpenters wives. Dont know how it all got started, I dont know what theyre doin with their lives. But me, Im still on the road Headin for another joint We always did feel the same, We just saw it from a different point of view, Tangled up in blue.
Will you say when I’m gone away "My lover came to me and we'd lay In rooms unfamiliar but until now" Oh oh oh oh Until now Oh oh oh oh Until now
Will you say to them when I’m gone "I loved your son for his sturdy arms We both learned to cradle then live without" Oh oh oh oh Live without Oh oh oh oh Live without
Will you say when I’m gone away 'Your father’s body was judgment day We both dove and rose to the riverside" Oh oh oh oh Riverside Oh oh oh oh Riverside
Will you say to me when I’m gone "Your face has faded but lingers on 'Cause light strikes a deal with each coming night" Oh oh oh oh Coming night Oh oh oh oh Coming night Oh oh oh oh Coming night Oh oh oh oh Coming night
I came upon a child of god He was walking along the road And I asked him, where are you going And this he told me Im going on down to yasgurs farm Im going to join in a rock n roll band Im going to camp out on the land Im going to try an get my soul free We are stardust We are golden And weve got to get ourselves Back to the garden
Then can I walk beside you I have come here to lose the smog And I feel to be a cog in something turning Well maybe it is just the time of year Or maybe its the time of man I dont know who l am But you know life is for learning We are stardust We are golden And weve got to get ourselves Back to the garden
By the time we got to woodstock We were half a million strong And everywhere there was song and celebration And I dreamed I saw the bombers Riding shotgun in the sky And they were turning into butterflies Above our nation We are stardust Billion year old carbon We are golden Caught in the devils bargain And weve got to get ourselves Back to the garden
I pictured a rainbow You held in your hands I had flashes But you saw then plan I wondered out in the world for years While you just stayed in your room I saw the crescent You saw the whole of the moon! The whole of the moon!
You were there at the turnstiles With the wind at your heels You stretched for the stars And you know how it feels To reach too high Too far Too soon You saw the whole of the moon!
I was grounded While you filled the skies I was dumbfounded by truths You cut through lies I saw the rain-dirty valley You saw brigadoon I saw the crescent You saw the whole of the moon!
I spoke about wings You just flew I wondered, I guessed, and I tried You just knew I sighed But you swooned I saw the crescent You saw the whole of the moon! The whole of the moon!
With a torch in your pocket And the wind at your heels You climbed on the ladder And you know how it feels To reach too high Too far Too soon You saw the whole of the moon! The whole of the moon!
Unicorns and cannonballs, Palaces and piers, Trumpets, towers, and tenemets, Wide oceans full of tears, Flag, rags, ferry boats, Scimitars and scarves, Every precious dream and vision Underneath the stars
You climbed on the ladder With the wind in your sails You came like a comet Blazing your trail Too high Too far Too soon You saw the whole of the moon!
Trouble Been doggin' my soul since the day I was born Worry Just will not seem to leave my mind alone Well I've been saved by a woman I've been saved by a woman I've been saved by a woman She won't let me go She won't let me go now She won't let me go She won't let me go now
Trouble Feels like every time I get back on my feet She come around and knock me down again Worry Sometimes I swear it feels like this worry is my only friend Well I've been saved by a woman I've been saved by a woman I've been saved by a woman She won't let me go She won't let me go now She won't let me go She won't let me go now
She good to me now She gave me love and affection She good to me now She gave me love and affection I said I love her She's good to me She's good to me
Up in my lonely room when im dreaming of you oh what can I do I still need you but I don't want you now
when I'm down and my hands are tied I can not reach a pen for me to draw the line from this pain I just cant disguise it's gonna hurt but I'll have to say goodbye
up in my lonely room when im dreaming of you oh what can i do i still need you but i dont want you now
oh yeah
up in my lonely room when im dreaming of you oh what can i do i still need you but i dont want you now
